Paul Howard – language teacher.

I’m a native English speaker. I teach advanced and intermediate English to adults in one to one lessons by webcam (Meet, Teams, Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom, etc).

I specialise in 1-1 coaching of adults, as this fits with my abilities and experience. I’ve found many lists of what people often look for in a tutor or coach and condensed them to twelve points here. I’ve written how I match up to those points. Each person is unique, so you might be looking for something not on the list. You are welcome to look through the rest of this web site, to read my profile on LinkedIn, and to get in touch with me to find out if I have what you need in a language coach.

1. Ability to explain things in many ways.

I know that people understand concepts in different ways and find some things more difficult than others. I can sense when students do not understand and try different approaches of presenting the things that they want to learn. I have taught people using video, flashcards, comic books, explaining the history of a language, creating mnemonics, and many other ways. On this web site and on YouTube you can see some videos I created with particular learning needs in mind. You may like some and not others.

2. Confidentiality.

You are likely to want to talk about yourself in the language you are learning, so I will know personal things you choose to tell me. Everything that goes on between us stays between you and me, except where disclosure is required by law, or is part of legal proceedings or is absolutely necessary to set the record straight if a learner should ever make false statements about what has gone on between me and her/him, or we both agree to it in writing. I have spent almost all my working life working with personal information.

3. Desire to help, make a difference.

I have always chosen work that helps others in different ways. There is a lot of detail about that in my Linked-In profile. I enjoy playing a part in others’ successes.

4. Empathy.

I know what it’s like for me to be a student, sometimes unsure, sometimes confident, sometimes motivated, sometimes distracted, sometimes not getting what the teacher was saying. I try to imagine what it’s like to be the particular learner I am working with. Empathy is something I have practiced and deepened over many years as a counsellor, helping people with personal problems.

5. Encouragement of independence.

Learners want to be able to use languages on their own, and I cannot just place language in their brains. Learning takes effort from the learner. I give you strategies to be an independent and more effective learner. I get you to look at how you think and learn, how you study, and how you manage your studies with the rest of your life.I don’t expect you to believe anything I’ve written here just because I’ve written it. You can check out what I’m like in a first free session.

6. Enthusiasm.

I enjoy learning and teaching languages.I chose to study languages and linguistics in my first degree, and the psychology of language as part of a masters. I love it when I see students grow in confidence and tell me about their successes.

7. Honesty.

I’ll say if I don’t know something you ask about a language and then find the answer if I can. I will own up if I make a mistake. Nobody’s perfect and even native speakers of French get genders wrong sometimes. I give honest, constructive feedback on how learners are progressing.Accurate feedback is a vital part of the learning process.

8. Listening.

I have highly developed listening skills from being a counsellor and counselling supervisor for many years. These, combined with my knowledge of linguistics and the psychology of language help me understand students’ misconceptions and errors. I am a skilled user of questions to help evaluate your understanding and then support you to deepen it. I’m also a skilled user of silence; I give you time to reflect on the subject at hand before going on, and do not jump in with hasty corrections.

9. Motivation.

I encourage you to be the best you can, to reach your goals, to recognize your strengths, and to focus on learning how to learn so that you will be successful in the future. I help you build success into your learning and celebrate it. I help you think through low motivation when it happens.

10. Patience.

As a coach I am there to help you get from where you are to where you want to be, to be a guide to your journey, not a slave-driver. Getting thing wrong is a normal part of the process of learning a language. Part of my role is to make it feel OK to risk saying the wrong thing during coaching sessions, and for you to be proud of your courage, not ashamed of a ‘failure’.

11. Professionalism.

A coach is a professional person with knowledge of the subject they teach. I have UK qualifications as a language teacher and counsellor. I have knowledge of specialist language from my experiences in management, psychological therapies, and academic study in English-speaking universities. You can see full details of my education and experience in my Linked-In profile. I keep my personal life separate from my professional life, including in my use of social media.

12. Respect and non-judgmental acceptance.

I treat all learners as individuals who can acquire new abilities and knowledge, no matter what their personal background or circumstances are.
